The Hillswick practice is the most northerly practice on the mainland of
Shetland, about 40 minutes by car (and ambulance) from Lerwick. There is a
twice daily bus service to Lerwick.
The Health Centre is situated in the middle of Hillswick, across the road
from an historic hotel with bar and dining facilities (currently closed). There is also an
occasional
vegan restaurant and seal sanctuary in what was the oldest Shetland pub,
the Booth, down on the waterfront. The village shop stocks groceries and
general provisions and, for a wider selection, including petrol/diesel,
there is a larger
shop in Ollaberry, around six miles away. The West Ayre beach in Hillswick
is an unspoilt white sandy beach 100 yards walk from the centre of the
village.
There is a newly-built café/restaurant in Eshaness, a
few miles away, with facilities for camping and caravanning. They provide
hot and cold snacks and an evening à la carte menu. Braewick Café is located
on a working croft with spectacular panoramic sea views including the famous
sea stack, the Drongs and also has a craft shop and gallery.
The North Mainland is an area of outstanding natural beauty, probably the
best and most rugged in Shetland. There are fabulous cliff walks,
including the famous Eshaness cliffs and the highest hill in Shetland.
There are also great areas of wilderness and it is a paradise for bird
watchers, geologists, botanists and fishermen, both sea and loch.
There is a thriving kayaking club in Lerwick, diving club in the North
Mainland and there are two golf courses near Lerwick. Shetland has
excellent leisure facilities, with swimming and leisure centres in every
area, our nearest being Brae. There are many sports available here
including tuition in most things for adults and children. Shetland is also famous for traditional music which is taught in the schools, and
there is a club locally. There are many social events, usually centred on
the public halls, throughout the year including a local Up Helly Aa in
February. For more information see rest of website and Local
Information.
